KY State Emergency Operations Center activated From Buddy Rogers, DirectorKY Emergency Management Center FRANKFORT, KY ( Sun Feb 15, 2015) - Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) will activate the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) this evening in preparation for a powerful winter storm that is expected to bring heavy snowfall across the Commonwealth. Emergency Management officials have been briefed by the National Weather Service (NWS) offices serving Kentucky on the winter storm system approaching the Commonwealth that is predicted to include heavy snow and bitter cold. Emergency Management officials are most concerned with the amount of predicted snowfall. NWS computer models indicate accumulations that vary from 6 to 16 inches across the Commonwealth. KYEM Director Michael Dossett has been in communication with county and state partners, as well as FEMA Region 4 today in preparation for the coming heavy snowfall. The State EOC will activate at Level Four Operations at 8 p.m. At Level Four Operations, additional personnel are activated in order to provide situational awareness to county directors and state agencies. "NWS forecasted accumulation levels are on track to surpass the highest snowfall events previously recorded in many areas of the Commonwealth," Dossett said. "Heavy snow accumulations create treacherous travel conditions. During this type of extreme weather the best advice is to stay home, but if you must travel, take your emergency kit along, allow extra time, take it slow and allow plenty of space between vehicles." KYEM recommends all Kentuckians know the risks and review winter emergency plans. Check batteries in flashlights, radios and other devices. If you have a generator, make sure it is working properly and you are familiar with using it safely. Road conditions throughout the state can be found on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's website at 511.ky.gov, by calling 511 in Kentucky or 1-866-737-3767 for out-of-state callers.
