Heidi Caron: Max Wise and Bam Carney wrong on Right to Work She writes that union members were the original "Rednecks." 'Not just Miners but Carpenters, Electricians, Teachers, Police all owe their working conditions and security to Unions. Many work related laws came from Unions. Child Labor Laws, lunch and rest breaks,Unemployment Benefits, Workman's Compensation, Overtime and days off. Thank a Union. - HEIDI CARON Click on headline for full commentary By Heidi Caron Personal opinion of the writer Max Wise and Bam Carney want Kentuckians to support a Right to Work Bill. Stating that it's "not against Unions but it's for workers and job." I don't agree with that statement and I'll tell you why. Unions were formed to protect workers during a time when conditions were deplorable for the American worker. Have we forgotten the Miners who fought and died in KY and WV for the right to Unionize? They fought for more Safety requirements, better working conditions, better pay, disability insurance and job security. Mine owners couldn't keep them indebted to them through the Company Store or throw miners and their families out of their homes. Union supporters were the original "Rednecks". They wore red bandanas to show their allegiance. Mitch McConnell campaigned over all the lost miners jobs but what do miners go back to without the Unions? Mines are closing because the owners are not paying fines for safety violations and environmental pollution violations. 26 miners were killed in WV, a Massey mine, because faulty equipment caused a spark which ignited coal dust and the water sprinklers failed to operate. Not just Miners but Carpenters, Electricians, Teachers, Police all owe their working conditions and security to Unions. Many work related laws came from Unions. Child Labor Laws, lunch and rest breaks,Unemployment Benefits, Workman's Compensation, Overtime and days off. Thank a Union. Unions are not job killers. Unions encourage long term employment, pride and loyalty. Unfortunately, people have forgotten what employers got away with before unions brought workers to unite and demand change. Unions gave power to the working people. Big Corporations want to go back to the old days when "The Man" made all the money off the backs of the lowly laborer. Many states have destroyed Collective Bargaining and are raiding Pensions. CEO's make more and more money while workers barely get by. Businesses are allowed to move overseas and not pay taxes. Those are the real job killers. Support the Unions. - Heidi Caron Columbia, KY PS. Even the Pillsbury Plant has to negotiate with the Union before closing. Workers, Union members, all receive severance packages, continued insurance, pensions and possibly job or career retraining. - Heidi Caron This story was posted on 2015-02-14 08:00:14
