Eld. Z.T. Williams, Rev. Chandler headed 1913 flood relief

Comments re article 72893 Freshet at Plum Point was portent of Great Flood of 1913

By JIM

Mr. Cumming's article about the Great Flood of 1913 is a most excellent read!

In the aftermath of that disaster , Eld. Z.T. Williams and Rev. J.H. Chandler called a meeting at the Adair County courthouse to solicit relief funds for those in direst need, and a large crowd attended that long ago Sunday evening, March 30th, 1913.

Said the News, "The court auditorium was full of people and they were there for the purpose of giving." After impassioned pleas from Eld. Williams and Rev. Chandler, "a collection was taken and $102.72 raised for the flood victims."

The next morning, another tidy sum--almost thirty dollars--came in from folks who had been unable the meeting, and "Mr. Jo N. Conover, who was Secretary of the public meeting, sent a check to the Red Cross Society, Louisville, for $131.87...." Meanwhile, the Columbia I.O.O.F. membership took up its own collection, forwarding $10.50 to the Grand Secretary of that fraternal organization.

In all, the good people of Adair County contributed over $142.00 toward the relief effort. Although that sum may sound terribly insignificant, it held the buying power of over $3,300 in today's money. Proclaimed the News--and rightly so--, "This town [and county] never fails to respond when a calamity comes." --JIM
