Changes Coming for Little League Baseball

By Wesley Scott Bennett, President
Adair County Little League

The 2015 Adair Co. Little League season will have a new look this year after the national Little League Congress adjusted the age determination for the baseball divisions. It has been a very confusing several months since the passing of the measure and the local Board of Directors have been mulling decisions for our league to maintain fun, competitive, and safe divisions of play for our young men.

According to the Little League International release," Using feedback from Little League(R) parents through our District Administrators, the Little League International Board of Directors adjusted the April-approved implementation strategy in order to modify the impact on all of our minor and major division players. The adjustment also allows for an easier transition for players in the early years of Little League participation."

"As a result of this recent adjustment to the implementation strategy, effective immediately, any player born on or after January 1, 2006 will use the new age determination date of December 31 for the reminder of their Little League Baseball career. Players will still be assigned to a division based on local league divisional structure. "

"Consequently, players born prior to January 1, 2006 will continue to utilize the current age determination date of April 30 for the remainder of their Little League career.

Adair Co. Little League will implement age divisions in the 2015 LL Baseball season

As a result of these changes passed down from national headquarters, Adair Co. Little League will implement the following age divisions in the 2015 season: Major League (11/12 year olds), Minor League (9/10 year olds), Coach Pitch (6, 7, 8 year olds), and Tee Ball (3,4,5 year olds). Five year old boys will have the option of moving to coach pitch with parent and board approval. The local league will see the biggest change in the minor league division.
"Our major issue will be the large number of nine year olds (birthdates from May 2005-December 2006) resulting from the rule change. This age division normally has four teams, but if our numbers line up from previous years we will have anywhere from 6-8 teams this year.

"The board has been working on ways to utilize our fields most effectively and have the least impact overall on the entire league, I feel that our plan is sound, but ask our parents, coaches, and players to be patient as this is implemented".
Softball age determination will remain the same

The age change rule is in effect for the baseball divisions only, the softball divisions age determination will remain the same as previous seasons. Parents with questions are encouraged to contact Scott Bennett, ACLL President (270) 250-4112 or any board member
