News from the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives

Former University of Kentucky basketball coach Joe B. Hall accepted the Distinguished Rural Kentuckian Award from the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives on November 17, 2014.

The award presentation described Hall's career that includes coaching the University of Kentucky men's basketball team for 13 years where he led the Wildcats to a national title, three Final Four appearances, and six Elite Eight appearances. It also highlighted his varied career since coaching that includes 10 years co-hosting a radio talk show with rival coach Denny Crum and working as a vice president of Central Bank.

In accepting the award Hall shared anecdotes of his time as a player under legendary coach Adolph Rupp and of his many connections to Kentucky's electric cooperatives. In his late teens, Hall cleared rights-of-way and dug post holes for Harrison County REA (now Blue Grass Energy Co-op). He later married Katharine Dennis who was named Miss Kentucky REA in 1950.

In the video tribute to Hall, he responded to the question of how would he like to be remembered by saying, "I hope my family remembers me in a good way and that I did well by them. I hope the fans and people I work for said I did a good job and that I certainly did it with passion, with hard work, and with competitiveness."
