Celia Downey: Bringing jobs issue down to earth By Celia Downey Personal commentary The article about jobs in Adair County is worthy of consideration. However; it has a 50,000 foot view. To drill down on providing jobs in Adair County there are many issues. To provide a job first consists of finding competent people who actually want to work and then to provide a work ethic. The work ethic consists of going to work as scheduled and other variables to numerous to mention. Then there is the employer overhead, including providing benefits. The benefit package typically adds 30% to actual wages paid. The employer must consider the wages paid plus the indirect costs of maintaining the physical work environment and the potential cost of litigation if all regulations are not followed. In a rural county with constrained finances it is no wonder that we do not have diverse job opportunities in any industry. Agreeably, a new restaurant would be nice, but who can afford to sustain the associated losses?
