Treats on the Town will be Halloween, 31 Oct 2014 Treats on the Town, will be Friday, 31 Oct 2014, 4pm-7pm, on the Square surrounding the Historic Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY. The Downtown Square will be closed off at Reed Street on Jamestown Street, Merchant/Reed on Campbellsville Street, Monroe (possible High for the Fall Festival at the Columbia Baptist Church on Greensburg Street, and Fortune Street on Burkesville Street. It is shaping to to be a huge event. It always is. "Last year," Chairperson Debbie Selby said, "there were around 1,500 kids or at Treats on The Town." She got that figure, she said, from a rough calculation of the candy handed out by by Sheriff Harrison Moss, who had upped his candy stash from 1,000 a year earlier to 1,200 last year, and still ran out. Selby says the organizers conservatively estimated there would have been at least 300 plus more. (At a similar Knifley event, Deputy BJ Bray handed out 250 candy treats) The idea behind the Treats on the Town is to provide a place for a Halloween which is fun and safe. And it's not just from town kids. All the children of Adair County are invited to attend. Already, Selby said Thursday morning, 9 Oct 2014, there are 15 spaces requested, a remarkable number when in all of 2013's highly successful event, there were 28. With three weeks to go, there are already more than half the donor participants as there were last year! According to the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce, participation is welcome from a wide spectrum, "Everyone is welcome to set up around the Square . . . businesses, churches, civic group, elected officials, families, individuals, young or old. . . " The Chamber also suggests the following: "Dress in costume, set up and decorate a treats table or car trunk to hand out Individually wrapped treats to the kids." Selby said that along the way, she and Kathy Johnson of the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce will keep the public informed about Treats on the Towns' progress.
