Workshops set on communicating with vulnerable in emegencies

'The goal of the KOIN, established in 2004, is to ensure that in the event of a public health emergency, communication channels are in place to contact some of Kentucky's most difficult-to-reach populations. Those populations include the deaf and hard of hearing; blind and visually impaired; limited or non-English proficiency speakers; individuals with low literacy levels; the elderly; disabled; economically disenfranchised and residents of remote rural areas.'
If interested in attending a local workshop, contact Barbara Fox at 502-564-6786, ext. 3102, or by e-mail at BarbaraJ.Fox@ky.gov for a list of participating ITV sites.

"Reaching these populations with accurate and timely information during emergencies is one of our top priorities, and the program's comprehensive materials and approach have set a standard for public health outreach to vulnerable populations across the nation."

Interactive workshops allow collaborative discussions

The interactive workshop will give Kentucky Outreach and Information Network (KOIN)/Kentucky Functional Needs Collaborative (KFNC) members the opportunity to engage in collaborative discussions, network and share ideas on ways to improve communication and outreach to vulnerable populations throughout Kentucky.

This year's agenda features topics on kynect, Kentucky's Healthcare Connection; Chronic Disease Resource Manual for Disaster Preparedness; Kentucky Community Crisis Response Board Overview; Kentucky Programs for the Elderly during Emergencies and Disasters; Medical Countermeasures for Community Preparedness; and an update on the KOIN/KFNC.

The meeting will be held in Frankfort, broadcast to ITV sites

The goal of the KOIN, established in 2004, is to ensure that in the event of a public health emergency, communication channels are in place to contact some of Kentucky's most difficult-to-reach populations. Those populations include the deaf and hard of hearing; blind and visually impaired; limited or non-English proficiency speakers; individuals with low literacy levels; the elderly; disabled; economically disenfranchised and residents of remote rural areas.

The KNFC was established in 2011 and is comprised of established partners who are subject matter experts on specific vulnerable populations. The KFNC ensures an effective public health emergency response system in Kentucky for vulnerable populations.
