Illegally placed signs will be removed from right-of-way Yard Sales, Elections And Mowing Season Prompt Transportation Officials To Reiterate Sign Placement Regulations Click on headline for complete story Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 4 - Elizabethtown, KY ELIZABETH, KY (September 25th, 2014) - Yard sales, political signs and other advertising signage are often set up in dangerous locations with disregard for sight distance, parking conditions and right-of-way infringement. Regarding yard sales - As a participant or a passing motorist, safety should be a top priority. First, setting a yard sale on right-of-way is illegal. These areas are used as safety zone buffers for motorists and they provide a clear view of vehicles entering, exiting and traveling on our roads. When objects block right of way areas, line of sight is reduced and crashes become more likely. Set up your yard sale off of right-of-way limits. Consider parking. If you are setting up a yard sale, think about where parking can be safely achieved. If you are attending a yard sale, do not park your vehicle where you block other motorists from seeing clearly and do not park your vehicle where you are too close to traffic. Motorists should be highly aware of surroundings. Just like in a construction zone, pay close attention when traveling through an area where multiple yard sales are taking place. Don't allow electronic devices to be a distraction. Slow down and be on the lookout for pedestrians. Taking these simple steps can greatly reduce the risk of vehicle crashes and pedestrian strikes. Regarding political and other signage - Residents, business operators and property owners along US and KY routes are reminded Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews have authority and will remove political signs along state maintained right-of-way areas. Additionally, KYTC officials take this opportunity to remind everyone no yard sale, auction, business or any other sign is allowed on state maintained right-of-way areas. Such signs must be placed beyond right-of-way limits. Right-of-way fence is included in this restriction. On roads with a right-of-way fence, no signs may be attached. It is also illegal to attach items such as flyers, posters, balloons or streamers to stop signs, highway markers or any other road sign or utility pole. Illegally placed materials along roads can create hazards by blocking sight distance or distracting drivers, particularly at intersections. Mowing crews are also now active through the district. Illegally placed signs present obstacles, slowing their progress and creating additional hazards to crewmembers and passing motorists. Removed items will be taken to the county KYTC maintenance facility. Unclaimed materials will be trashed or recycled. In a current advertising trend, billboards attached to semi trailers are popping up around the district. Anyone utilizing this method of placing billboards should be aware that federally regulated routes, such as interstates and parkways, restrict billboards. Some US and KY routes are federally funded and also have restrictions.
