Kentucky high schools can register for Poetry Out Loud By Emily B. Moses News from the Kentucky Arts Council FRANKFORT, KY - Schools and teachers can register through October 1, 2014, to participate in Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation competition created by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation. Any Kentucky high school, public or private, may register to participate in Poetry Out Loud. Homeschooled students may compete through a participating local high school or a home school regional competition hosted by a local library or community center. "We're thrilled to again be partnering with the NEA and the Poetry Foundation to offer the opportunity to Kentucky high school students to compete in Poetry Out Loud," said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director. "Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn through memorization and performance, develop public speaking skills, build self-confidence and celebrate our nation's literary heritage." Poetry Out Loud begins at the classroom level and advances through schoolwide and statewide competitions. The winner of the state competition represents Kentucky at the national finals in Washington, D.C. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Poetry Out Loud and the first time works by Kentucky writers have been included in the material students may choose to memorize and recite for the competition. To learn more about Poetry Out Loud or to register a school for participation, visit http://artscouncil.ky.gov/Grants/POL.htm. For information about participating, contact Jean St. John, arts education director, at jean.stjohn@ky.gov or 888-833-2787, ext. 486. The deadline to register is October 1. The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, fosters environments for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts.
