A crowd of 100 was on hand Saturday afternoon at an hastily organized rally for U.S. Senate nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes.

Just a few days ago her campaign called local Democratic political leaders to set up the rally, squeezed in between a rally in Russell County, and another in Hart County.

Adair County Democratic Chairman Ben Loy was the only person to share the platform with the rally's only speaker, Alison Lundergan Grimes.

Grimes' father, Jerry Lundergan, is well known Adair Countians, especially those famliar with Adair County Fairs in the last 50 years.

Adair County Democratic Women's Club President Vicky Pike and Vice President Cynthia Rowe made contacts and helped with arrangements.>BR?>BR? Junior Stotts, who made personal calls to business friends and political allies for the meeting, said he was extremely satisfied with the turnout, which he said, may have been cut in half because of all the other activities in the area. "There were games over at Lindsey Wilson," he said, "and I know from all the interest in Alison's stand on college affordability that a lot of them would have been here, if we had held it at another time."

Stotts said that Grimes' college loan ideas would mean a lot to Columbia's economy because of Lindsey Wilson College's importance to the economic well-being of the community.

Grimes sounded populist themes of better pay for lower and middle income groups, advances in equality for women, and, for Lindsey Wilson College town Columbia, KY, a fairer deal for college loans.

Organizers thought the big crowd would have been even bigger had it not been for the multitude of major fall events and big Lindsey Wilson Sports events which diverted that Grimes base constituency from the event.

Grimes campaign style, getting the audience to rock with negative refrains portraying her opponent Mitch McConnell as a "No," negative, backward looking individual, and herself as the "Yes" candidate of tomorrow, resonated with group assembled at Jim Blair Center, Saturday afternoon, September 6, 2014.

Most of the media showed up for the rally. Representatives of the two local weekly newspapers and It's Just for Smile News, were there, and, according to Stotts, audio would be furnished to local radio stations.

The audience was predominately Democratic, but did include a large number of members of Grimes' opponent McConnell's Republican Party, a large number of independents, and a larger number of women.

The Grimes-McConnell race is watched across the nation. It's called a toss-up, though most polls at this time give a slight edge to the incumbent.

The fervor of the large crowd in Republican Adair County would seem to bode well for Grimes, though there wasn't much evidence of "bumper stickers on beat up old pickups." That, in the old days, was seen a near sure sign that a revolution was taking place.

Red Nixon

Red Nixon was among the diverse crowed with attended the impromptu rally for U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes on a busy afternoon, Saturday, September 6, 2014. Red, a hero of the ACHS class of 1958, remembered for being able to enter a tight basketball game, shoot - and hit - a 30 foot game winning goal the first time he'd get his hands on the ball and who may have been the only person the late coach John Burr would never criticize for impetuousness if he missed - is also the only Adair County High School Coach ever to coach a state Track & Field champion. Today, at 76, he is the premier preservation contractor in the area. But don't try to hire him. He's booked up heavier than ever.
