News from Homeplace on Green River

Mr. Rex Mann, who is on the national board of the American Chestnut Foundation and Mr. Lynn Garrison, the Kentucky Chapter President, at Homeplace, this week.

They were taking soil samples for a test in preparation for establishing an American Chestnut Research Orchard at the Homeplace on Green River.

The ACF is attempting to breed phytophthora resistance into the American Chestnut. Of course, most of us are familiar with the Chestnut Blight which wiped out the American Chestnut population during the early to mid 20th century but Phytophthora is a soil pathogen that also kills American Chestnut in the southern reaches of it's range.

Oh, and don't forget about our Fall Heritage Festival going on most all day, today. Come, eat, enjoy, hike, and just come back home for a spell. Website: Homeplace on Green River.org.
