Joyce Coomer: Dealing with scams She has technique which works every time By Joyce Coomer Several years ago, the state of Kentucky gave amnesty to people who owed back taxes and weren't able to pay. Shortly after this was announced, we started receiving phone calls at the shop saying the business owed back taxes and this company would help us negotiate a lower bill with the state. The first four or five times they called, I was out of the shop and someone else took the calls. Of course, they didn't suspect that this was a scam and were upset over the phone calls. I knew it was a scam and was biding my time until they called and I answered the phone. Eventually, I was the one who answered the phone. I asked where they received this information and they said from the state of Kentucky. I asked the person on the phone if he could fax me the documents. He said he could and I gave him Hunter Durham's fax number, stating he was my attorney. Needless to say, that was the end of these phone calls. And Hunter never received any faxes on this topic. I have used this technique several times since when I suspected the phone call was a scam of some sort. It is amazing how quickly these people can disappear. I simply say, "My attorney handles these sort of situations for me. Would you like his fax/phone number?" Works every time! - Joyce M. Coomer This story was posted on 2014-08-07 15:42:57
