Jon Halsey: Somerset's plan to retail gas is totally wrong

Personal commentary
Comments re article 67831: Gas/Link Story on City of Somerset KY plan to sell gasoline

By Jon Halsey

While the intentions are laudable, the course of action is totally wrong.

Government should not be in Business and certainly not in direct competition with citizens.

Services that cannot be provided or would be extremely inefficient for private enterprise to provide are an acceptable and necessary function of government. Operating a "For Profit" business competing with multiple private outlets is a road that should never be traveled.

One of many questions that come to mind: Is the City going to pay ALL Federal, State AND LOCAL taxes?

There would seem to be a Gordian Knot of regulations, taxes, state and local fees wages and salaries, benefits, equipment, lease/rent, insurance, overhead, all affecting the cost of operating the station that put the struggling private companies at a disadvantage when competing against a government entity.

Price gouging is hard to prove but it is also an area that is the proper purview of local government but one that we seldom see pursued by our "Public Servants".
