A Grandmother's Love Travis and Dylan Hale's grandmother, Mrs. Charlene Hale knows from 34 years teaching experience in the Russell County School District how much volunteers can do to improve education. Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Shamarie Claiborne, Media Publicity Coordinator Adair County School District Will volunteering in your child or grandchild's school improve their academic life? It has been researched and studied for years, and the verdict is a resounding yes! Just ask Travis and Dylan Hale. When the twin sons of Carolyn and Anthony Hale started school their families wanted them to have every opportunity to succeed. Carolyn, a busy local pharmacist, had been told by her mother-in-law Charlene Hale, a veteran teacher in the Russell County School System, about the benefits of family members volunteering in a student's school and how it can improve the quality of a student's academic and social success. Carolyn took her mother-in-laws advice to heart and volunteered when she could while the boys attended Colonel William Casey. In the mean time, Charlene Hale decided it was time after 34 years to retire from the profession she had dedicated her life to, teaching. Charlene spent the summer after her retirement doting on her grandchildren including Travis and Dylan. In the fall of Travis and Dylan's 4th grade year, Charlene decided she wanted to give her grandsons a special gift. The greatest gift any child could ever receive. The gift of her time. That year, Mrs. Hale, volunteered in the boys school, John Adair, one afternoon a week. Dylan and Travis loved her being there and looked forward to her "volunteer afternoon" the entire year. The boys and Charlene loved that first year so much that over the next 4 years she has continued to volunteer in Travis and Dylan schools. From John Adair, to ACES, to ACMS she has followed them. Working not only in their classrooms but anywhere she was needed in their school. She has done everything from grading papers, tutoring, making copies, organizing materials, cleaning tables, --- in other words --- anything a staff member needed her to do, she was there. Mrs. Pat Coomer had the privilege of working closely with her this past year and had only praises to sing. She asked Mrs. Hale one day why she continued to help in the school now that the boys were bigger and she said "I guess after 39 years, I still can't get teaching out of my system." I know her grandson Travis told me yesterday "I hope Mimi comes to the high school with us!" Mrs. Hale taught high school English as well as 2nd and 3rd grades in Russell County so the high school setting would not be unfamiliar to her. The children who are moving to 9th grade with Travis and Dylan have seen and interacted with Mrs. Hale most of their academic life so her face would be a comforting and familiar one in a strange place. We can only say how grateful we are for her dedication to her grandchildren and the craft of teaching. Our entire school system has benefited from her presence over the years and with any luck the boys will be able to convince her to follow them on to high school. Mrs. Hale has 5 grandchildren, one who attends Somerset Community College, another who is a senior at Russell County High School, the twins Travis and Dylan, and a five year old grandson who will be starting Kindergarten in Russell County next year. The Adair County School System can only say this -- If she decides to return and volunteer at ACHS next year, she will be welcomed with open arms. But if a Kindergarten teacher in Russell County is blessed by her love and dedication to her grandchildren --- then they will be the lucky ones. Either way there will be children in the world that will better in the end from experiencing and watching a grandmothers love in action. Thank you again Mrs. Charlene Hale for the countless hours you have given to our school system and your grandsons! You are without question a special lady! - Shamarie Claiborne This story was posted on 2014-05-30 11:40:00
