Tuesday night, May 20, 2014, the "This is Art"event had over 100 people present for the viewing. I will have to say from a personal standpoint, it was one of best art shows I have ever attended! The pieces were all light-centered and illuminated the Arboretum. What I think made it even more special was the fact that not only did art students have pieces but students from cross disciplines participated as well.

This wonderful night was the "baby" of Mrs. Debra Wimmer, Mrs. Shelia Willis, and Mrs. Heather Spoon. The Art, Energy, and Science departments all worked together to collaborate this memorable night of unique one-of-a-kind art created by three academic disciplines that one doesn't always think of mixing together. The Adair County School District is truly blessed to have such innovative teachers who think outside the box within the district. Yet, the truly lucky ones are the students of Adair County High School because not only are these ladies smart creative women but they all genuinely care about their students and want to provide opportunities for them to learn while being engaged at the same time.

The Energy Academy students want to give special thanks to Connie Burris for the donation of 100 glass spaghetti jars. Without those jars their piece entitled "Light Cylinder" would not have been possible! Students and staff both want to thank the community for their support in both attendance and materials. We hope next year will be even bigger! - Shamarie Claiborne

Emily Peck's art work was spectacular last night at the This is Art premier at Adair County High School. The collaboration between Energy, Science and Art departments was one I will not soon forget. There was a large crowd in attendance. If you look in the distance you can see the line of people entering the exhibit. - Shamarie Claiborne, Adair County School District Media publicity coordinator

Mrs. Willis' Environmental Science students
did this work entitled "Wood and Light." The idea was to enhance the environment with a sense of calm and peace with small candle luminaries. It worked! - Shamarie Claiborne, Media Publicity Director, Adair County School District

Exhibit 6 was created by Marina Otine, Sara McQuaide, Tyler Rowe, and Jessie Sanchez.
The students asked the audience to think outside the box! They reminded them a laser is not just a dot of light, maybe it is a field of stars, or whatever else you might imagine when you use your imagination! - Shamarie Claiborne, Media Publicity Director, Adair County School District

This Is Art at ACHS: Fairies in a jar

From this angle Sarah McQuaide's "Fairies in a Jar"
were almost spell casting. Sarah's hope had been to represent the mystery and beauty of the world around us. In Sarah's world - without the tree, the fairies cannot "fly" and without the fairies, the tree cannot grow. It's beauty truly made my heart skip a beat - the fairies were made from the baby food jars many of you donated! - Shamarie Claiborne, Media Publicity Director, Adair County School District

This Is Art at ACHS: Light Cylinder

2014-05-22 - ACHS Arboretum, 481 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne, Adair Co. School District photo. The "Light Cylinder" was created by the Energy Academy Students and utilized most of the spaghetti jars donated by the public. The academy students were able to study and apply engineering concepts with the physics of light - at the same time they made something truly awesome. They wanted to thank Connie Burris for her gracious donation of roughly 100 jars. Without her there would have been no "Light Cylinder." - Shamarie Claiborne, Media Publicity Director, Adair County School District
