Udell Thomas Shirley, Adair County, KY (1951-2014)

Adair County has lost one of its best. He was a native of Adair County, and a resident of the county at the time of his death. He was a member of a highly respected northwest Adair County, KY family, the son of Maerene Brock Shirley, who survives, and the late Evan Thomas Shirley. His wife, Norma Jean Bledsoe Shirley, also survives. He leaves 4 direct living descendants. He was a business leader, an entrepreneur, and an innovative merchandiser. He was a generous proprietor, who conducted his business with a deep sense of traditional Adair County values. He was dedicated to economic advancement of the community, and was key figure of a small band of young men who led a wave of economic development, progress, and political change in Columbia/Adair County in the 70s and 80s, self-named "The Boys." He and his wife were the founders, owners, and operators of Udell’s Fruit Market, which, from its inception, attracted a large and loyal following. He was also a farmer and had worked at Oshkosh B’Gosh and was a school bus driver for the Adair County Board of Education. He attended the Sparksville Church of the Nazarene. Udell Thomas Shirley had special gift for making everyone he met feel better about themselves, a trait for which he will be long remembered. - CM
