Questions validity of special called meeting Comments re article 65969 Columbia City Council Special called meeting March 13 2014 Click on headline for complete personal commentary and CM comments. By Kenny Absher Personal commentary of the writer Ed, perhaps I am mistaken but isn't it a legal requirement that any meeting by city counsel must be posted at least 24 hours before said called meeting; there was an incident not long ago where a special meeting was called by yet another government agency and was canceled because of this requirement. In this day and age of complete mistrust of local government, and once again I could have misunderstood, is this a legal meeting or not, we come to expect not out of our elected officials. - Kenny Absher Kenny: Thanks for raising the question. I don't know; I defer to Sharon Burton of the Community Voice on this issue. I do know that it wasn't the intention of City Hall not to let everyone know 24 hours in advance. Rhonda Loy called us to let us know that the notice had been sent, her email client says it was sent; but apparently there was a failure because she had not received requested notification that the local media had received it. So far, it's our understanding that they do plan to hold the meeting which will have only one item on it: Approving the minutes of the last meeting. I'm not with you on total mistrust of government. By and far we are served by honest, well meaning individuals. That being said, I think you hit a nerve when it comes to diligence and healthy sceptism. We'll keep you posted. -EW PS - It is an election year, and incumbents and challengers seem to be paying very special attention to the niceties of governing. - ED This story was posted on 2014-03-13 05:38:08
