Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com The Adair County and Taylor County rivalry in boys basketball was renewed last night at Taylor County High School with the Cardinals taking home a highly contested 62-57 victory. The Cardinals used a 12-2 run to start the 3rd period to pull away from the Indians and then hung on for the win. The score was tied 12-12 after one period and Taylor led 25-24 at the half. Matt Fudge scored 13 first half points including a three at the buzzer to cut the deficit to one point. After Taylor jumped out to a 36-26 advantage Chance Melton scored 6 third quarter points to keep the Indians close 49-38 going into the final period. Led by seven 4th period points by both Ty Bennett and Fudge the Tribe made a gallant comeback. A Jake Hixson steal and layup pulled the Indians to within one point at 57-56 with just under a minute to play. The Indians had three good looks from behind the trey in the closing seconds that would have tied the game and possibly sent the game to overtime but were unable to connect. Taylor was clutch from the free throw line in the 4th period. The Cardinals connected on 9 of 9 from the charity stripe while the Indians connected on 9 of 13. Fudge and Melton paced the Indians with 20 and 12 points respectably. Rounding out the scoring were Bennett 9, Hixson 6, Marshall Shelley 6, Zach Hutchison 3, and Jacob Pooler 1. Melton pulled down 8 rebounds while Hixson had 5, Shelley 4, Bennett 4, and Pooler 4. The Cardinals are ranked number 1 or 2 in the poles in the 5th region and improved to 16-4.
