Walkabout: Frost Flowers growing on thiin sheet of ice

2014-01-28 - Clifty Falls Farm, Columbia, KY - Photo by Miss Donna Rieder.
These are "frost flowers" growing on top of a thin sheet of ice covering a puddle. The grass underneath the ice makes it look like they are actually real flowers when, in fact, they are ice crystals. Small air-holes where the grass penetrates the ice cause a temperature change which allows the ice crystals to form this way. Pretty cool, huh? - Donna Rieder

Walkabout: Floating frost flowers, Clifty Creek

2014-01-28 - Clifty Falls Farm, Columbia, KY - Photo by Miss Donna Rieder.
More frost flowers "floating" down a frozen Clifty Creek.
I feel SO blessed to be able to go on walkabouts along the creek and take in the many wonders of Nature. Every day brings new wonders to behold. People need to slow down and take a good look around them, at the world they live in, and they too will discover little gems to enrich their lives . . . - Donna Rieder
