Green Co. Jury recommends 20 years, 6 months for Salyers

The Green County Grand jury which convicted David Salyers of complicity to commit murder yesterday, January 21, 2014, recommended a sentence of 20 years, 6 months in the penalty phase of Salyers' trial.

Judge Judy Vance instructed the jury that their options were not less than 20 years, or more than 50 years, or for life, in their discretion.

The finding of guilty came under Judge Vance's Instuction No. 3, Complicity to commit murder which read:
"You will find the defendant guilty of Complicity to Commit Murder under this Instruction if, and only if, you believe from the evidence beyond a reasonable doubt all of the following: A. That in Casey County on or about September 26, 1912, and before the finding of hte Indictment herein, William Robert Rigdon killed Wendell Gleason Pyles by shooting him with a gun; B. That Prior to the killing, David Salyers had solicited, Counseled, commanded, and/or engaged in a conspiracy with William Robert Rigdon to kill Wendell Gleason Pyles; AND, 1.) Tha in so doing David Salyers intended that Wendell Gleason Pyles would be killed."
Judge Vance had instructed the jury that authorized verdicts were A. Not Guilty OR B. GUILTY, of Complicity to Commit Murder, OR C. GUILTY, of Complicity to Commit Mnslaughter in the Second Degree, or D. GUILTY, of Complicity to Commit Reckless Homicide.

A spokesperson in the Green County Circuit Clerk's office in Greensburg said that formal sentencing will likely be sometime in March, 2014.
