Darlene Bunch: Scam Alert

A trip to local store confirmed the phone call was a hoax, a scam

By Darlene Bunch

Today (Saturday, January 11, 2013) my husband received a phone call regarding a prize of money he had supposedly won from Walmart. The amount was $300,000.00. He was told to take down such and such number and a confirmation code to give when he called the number to verify they were legit. This was supposed to be a totally separate number from the place that had called and was not supposed to be affiliated with the original caller. Then we were supposed to call the original person back to give them a code that we had received from the second number. I asked my husband to wait until we got to Walmart. which was where we were going, to ask if it was true or a scam, which I suspected it was. Within 5 minutes the man called back and wanted to know why we hadn't called the number. Mind you this was supposed to be a number not affiliated with the first number at all, so how would the first person know we hadn't called it. We got to Walmart and asked about the information they had given us and they verified it was definitely a scam and an exchange of money was required to make the transaction, I just wanted to make sure I made people aware of this to prevent someone from making a big mistake. - Darlene Bunch
