January of 1977 was far colder than than this January thus far Billy Joe Fudge writes: According to historical weather data for Louisville, the average daily low for January, 1977 was 12 degrees which was far below the average daily low of 27 degrees for January and I believe will be far below the average daily low for this present January, to date. Although I don't have the figures at hand, according to NOAA, at that time and for the Eastern United States the winter of 1917-1918 was the closest to severity of the winter of 1976-1977 for the 20th century.
