I-65 Widening Underway from Horse Cave to Munfordville Will be three lanes in each direction after widening By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 4, Elizabethtown, KY ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (December 16, 2013) - Widening of Interstate 65 to three lanes in each direction continues northward with work beginning today on the next section. Scotty's Contracting has a $63.6 million dollar contract for the project, which was awarded in late November. As the next step of a goal to expand the interstate from four to six lanes all the way to Elizabethtown, this project pushes north approximately seven miles (mile point 58 - mile point 65) from the endpoint of a project that is currently underway through the Horse Cave Interchange. The new project will include the Munfordville Interchange, ending just to the north. Crews will be closing the outside lane of northbound and southbound this week as they prepare to pave temporary driving lanes where shoulders currently exist. This will allow the contractor to install temporary barrier wall and begin work in the median. Closures will take place each day through Thursday from 6am to 5pm (Central Time). Traffic delays will be possible during peak afternoon hours. A speed limit reduction to 55mph is in place through the new work zone. Mobile message boards have been placed on approach, alerting southbound motorists of the change ahead. Northbound motorists are already in a construction zone as they approach the new project's starting point. Kentucky State Police will be present to increase awareness. This project includes reconstruction of several bridges. Structures over Green River are the most significant. The KY 88 bridge over I-65 will also be rebuilt along with bridges over CSX Railroad and US 31W in Munfordville. With the exception of the initial phase (this week), two lanes will be open each direction through the project's duration. The expected completion date is October, 2015. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's District 4 Office in Elizabethtown will continually update local media and other sources regarding the project's progress.
