Adair Fiscal CT (Nov. 12, 2013) - Ann: Closing WRH would be disaster Now's the time, Judge Melton, Westlake Chairman Craig Pyles say, to close ranks and support Westlake Regional Hospital. PERIOD. It's in the people's hands they say. Destiny will be determined by the will of the people. The disastrous 2007 increase : Happened before this Hospital Board, under Hospital Board appointed before this Judge, and before Most of this Court, took office. By Ed Waggener After hearing a cautious but very hopeful report from Adair County Hospital Board of Trustees Chairman Craig Pyles and Vice Chair Neal Gold, listening to questioning of the board by Second District Magistrate Daryl Flatt then passionate endorsement of the current Board, Judge Executive Ann Melton summarized the situation at the Tuesday, November 12, 2013 Fiscal Court meeting. First of all, she said that the hospital issue was one this court, this judge, and this board inherited and is now meeting and is turning around. Secondly, she said that what this hospital board has done to negotiate for the lowest tax burden the court will allow, AND, were the hospital to close, not only would we lose a very vital institution, but the taxes would continue, and, in all likelihood be much higher. Finally, she said: "We have to have a hospital. We have to have it for our kids, our parents, ourselves. And there's more. Do you think parents are going to send kids to Lindsey Wilson College in a town with no hospital? Lindsey is our biggest employer. It's a $60 million a year 'business.' Can we allow that to happen to them. And Westlake itself is a major employer - their payroll is around $10 million. It's simply unthinkable not to have a hospital here. Judge Melton said that the mounting debts. (See Summary of Westlake debts: $20,112,958.00/a timeline on how the debts ballooned occurred before any of the current hospital trustees were on its board, before most of the Fiscal Court members of today began their tenure and were appointed before she was Adair County Judge Executive. (At CM's Request, Judge Melton prepared a list of trustees who were in office when the huge Westlake indebtedness skyrocketed, in 2007.) Judge Melton reiterated Chairman Craig Pyles simple message: The hospital will either make it or not depending on residents' utilization of its servce. Those who do not support it will be only raising financial problems for themselves. The tax is a certainty. It will be lower if the hospital prospers. It could multiply if it closes. Others echo sentiment Third District Magistrate Sammy Baker, rising to one of his best moments, thanked Second District Magistrate Daryl Flatt for raising what he said were valid questions, but he cautioned the court not to insist on a backup plan or to in essence, pander to the county's lowest common denominator. "I have complete confidence in this board," he said, and asked that the court only give them the support they deserve. "Let them manage the hospital," he said. Seventh District Magistrate Billy Rowe agreed, as did others, and, in the end, Magistrate Flatt, answered that he too, is totally opposed to any plan which would mean Westlake might close.
