Modifications will be made to speed bumps along Keltner Road

Humps will be made more like those on Carrie Bolen Drive. Humps on south side of Betty's OKCC will be removed. Idea was to slow cut through traffic speed, prevent collisions on Keltner Road, Magistrate Rowe says.

By Ed Waggener

Seventh District Magistrate Billy Rowe reports that the controversial speed bumps along Keltner Road at Betty's OK Country Cooking will undergo major modifications.

"First of all," he said, "they weren't put in to slow traffic on Keltner Road. They were installed to stop drivers who don't know the area from cutting across Betty's parking lot to get to Keltner Road. A lot of people think that's a public road, not a private business road."

He said that he knows of at least one collision caused when a driver failed to stop when cutting across the lot. "And, he said, "I want to make it clear that it wasn't Betty's customers who caused the problem. They almost all know the road, and know to enter Keltner Road with caution."

In the next few days, Mr. Rowe said, Selby Asphalt will add blacktop on both sides of the curbs to make the speed bumps more like gentle ramps. "They will be more like the speed bumps on Carrie Bolen Drive, behind the Bank of Columbia Jamestown Street branch."

And the speed bumps on the south side of the restaurant, between Betty's OKCC and Betty's home, will simply be removed. "They aren't needed," he said.
