Melinda Rhoads shares her story of Ronald McDonald House

'We are not a rich family by any means; we struggle like everyone else. But in the past years and not having an idea that we would have to use the Ronald McDonald House, we have tried to collect items and donate them. The prior year we donated a reusable Walmart bag full of toiletries. It's not the amount you donate, it's just that you donate something.' - MELINDA RHOADS

My name is Melinda Rhoads and I wanted to share our story about Ronald McDonald House since the collection drive is upon us for the 2013 year. My son was born in Taylor County on May 29, 2012 he was 3 1/2 weeks early and it was an emergency C-section.

Within two days our pediatrician told us there were problems, but not life threatening; we were due to see a Neurologist in Louisville in the coming months unless his illness worsened.

Sadly, in July Aiden had a severe choking episode where he turned blue. We went straight to the pediatrician and then were sent to Kosair. This would be our first of many trips to Kosair.

Then in February of this year Aiden was due to have eye surgery and it was to be very early in the morning; and it was uncertain at that time whether it would be as an outpatient or if we would be staying additional days.

Of course you know, Louisville is 100 miles - almost two hours away - and it would make for a very stressed trip to take an infant out at 2 a.m. to drive that far.

I contacted the Ronald McDonald House in Louisville and was put on a list and they had our room available that day!

We arrived to a secure check in. My son was given a beautiful hand made doll donated by some area church ladies who made and donated them.

The lobby was very friendly we were given the tour of the facility and we went over all the rules. They have a check in/check out board in front so desk staff can locate you at all times.

There is a kitchen located there and each room has assigned/locked space; also different groups in the community prepare HOT meals and bring them each day.

The leftovers are stored in the refrigerator in case a family comes without food.

There is a laundry area there as well each room is very comfortable they have shampoo, lotion, soap, etc.

If needed, you are given a cleaning assignment if you are there for an extended stay.

The cost was $25 or less per day. much cheaper and safer than a motel.

You are given a list of things to do in your room before you check out to make it ready for the next guest.

Everything in this place is wonderful! It is a very short distance from the hospital and you are given all the comforts of home.

Many families come with NOTHING because they can't afford it or because they have had to leave in such a rush that they had no time to pack. So to know that you can come here regardless of the situation and have the comforts of home is wonderful. It's just one less worry from your mind when you need to be focused on your child....

We are not a rich family by any means; we struggle like everyone else. But in the past years and not having an idea that we would have to use the Ronald McDonald House, we have tried to collect items and donate them. The prior year we donated a reusable Walmart bag full of toiletries.

It's not the amount you donate, it's just that you donate something - because, I can tell you from personal experience, this place is wonderful and makes use of every item donated. Let's face it: none of us know when our child, grandchild, sister or brother could be in the hospital and you would need a safe place to stay.

Aiden continues to improve, but we have numerous doctor and hospital visits and we never know when we will need them again.

So I urge you to PLEASE donate anything you can no matter how small or large.

AIDEN appreciates each and every one of you for caring. - MELINDA RHOADS
