Police shoot man wielding knife

KSP Post 4, Elizabethtown, KY

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY - On Sunday, September 29, 2013 at approximately 11:38pmET , Kentucky State Police Post 04 received a call in regards to a welfare check requested by family members in the 2000 Block of Hodgenville Road.

Gerald R. Scheppa (53) of Elizabethtown had made suicidal references to family members which prompted their call to Post 4.




When Troopers arrived at the scene the suspect had a large knife on his person and immediately ran into a wooded area that bordered his residence.

Mr. Scheppa was located in the wooded area by KSP Troopers. After failing to comply with the Trooper's commands the suspect became belligerent, threatening, and brandished the knife.

The suspect then stepped and threw the knife at Tpr. Charlie Miller who simultaneously fired one shot from his service weapon striking the suspect.

He was then taken into custody and transported by ambulance to Hardin Memorial Hospital where he was later taken to the University of Louisville Hospital for surgery. Mr. Scheppa was charged with Assault 3rd degree (police officer).

KSP Post 4 was assisted on the scene by the Hardin Co. EMS. The investigation is ongoing.
