Kathryn Miller - Wants later hours for local businesses

Comments re article 62047 Time to quit writing about downtown and do something about it

Kathryn Miller writes:
Just wanted to comment on one part of your letter (Lois Cunningham: Time to quit writing about downtown and do something about it) in particular. The part about people being attracted to businesses on the square if it was more accessible. That is true that not being accessible does hurt a business. However, closing your doors at 5pm and not being open on weekends hurts a business even more. When you roll up the streets at 5pm or sundown; you shut out the average working person and the college students in our town. The businesses downtown will not grow until they get with the times and see where their customer base will come from if they would just give a little. --Kathryn Miller
Just a comment: The business people I've talked to say they try tailor hours to times when people come. Maybe if customers who want a business to stay open certain hours would promise to come then, and agree to get others to come, it could happen.

Even one extra hour of operation, with no income, can be devastating. It's a two-way street, with no blame on either side. - EW
