Poetry by Robert Stone: Still are worth the chance

Still are worth the chance
- a sonnet reminding the poet to pay better attention
I slipped and fell into familiar air
and downward brushed against the folding rack
and clothes and cloths quite dry were waiting there,
like me, oblivious to coming whack.

I slid and failed to stop before the crunch
and sideways touched too many twinging stings
and good and bad from past arose with punch,
like me, forgetting all that hope still sings.

I slowed and foiled mishaps that were not swift
and upward moved with seeming grace and charm
and true and false seemed same but far adrift,
like me, unsure if doubt should cause alarm.

Yet some encounters still are worth the chance
of being death's request for final dance.

- Robert Stone, 4 August 2013
