(Ad) Farmer's Market on the Square, What's scheduled - Today

The Farmer's Market on the Square, open 8am-12pm noon CT, Saturday, August 3, 2013, at the Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY
You're welcome to come early, during set up starting at 6pmCT. Downtown is a great place for morning coffee and visits. Almost every weekend someone tells us the market is worth because they just met a friend they hadn't seen in years. CLICK ON HEADLINE for complete list of vendors and entertainment.

By Barbara Armitage, Market Coordinator

There is so much more to the Farmer's Market on the Square than just vegetables.

Caesar is now a bona fide food critic. Last week, Jay Cox put his top seller to the test, patiently waiting for a sign of approval as Caesar, David Moore's 235 pound Great Dane, downed one of Jay's Country Ham Sandwiches in one giant bite.

Caesar takes his job as the Farmer's Market on the Square's official food critique very seriously. A lot of customers depend on him to advise them about where to find a great meal. Jay Cox keeps Country Ham Sandwiches hot and ready. He also serves a pork tenderloin sandwich and is expanding the menu to include a Pork Shoulder plate with sides today for the Saturday August 3, 2013, Farmer's Market on the Square.

Caesar has given his official seal of approval to Jay Cox's Country Ham Sandwiches so you know that they are good but he's still waiting for his taste test on the other items. We'll try to get back to you on other items.

Jay Cox's food is just one more reason to come Downtown on Saturdays. That's one of the fun things about FM2. There's access to all the local shops - you can even get your haircut while you're here, go to the permanent stores and restaurants, and even eat and snack while you visit us. Everything is convenient downtown. Parking. Shopping. Food. Facilities.

Thanks again to CJE Ann Melton and Adair County Fiscal Court for opening the annex and providing the Farmers Market with a ready-made place to set up. Thanks to Mayor Harris and The Columbia City Council for having providing police protection.

Special Guests at the Market this week: Spiritual Warfare is returning with Martial Arts demonstrations and Christian music. Members are Joshua Tucker, Sam Avery, Darlene Campbell, Heather Tucker, & Dick Scholl. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy this free concert.

Perfect tomatoes at Farmers Market on the Square

2013-08-03 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square - Photo By Ed Waggener. Darrell Bunnell of Coview Farms was offering these perfect sized, perfect tasting tomatoes this morning, Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Farmers Market on the Square. They're a bargain compared to some of the brought on, cardboard tasting tomatoes in some stores. I bought just three of the former yesterday. Paid over $1 a piece and the difference in taste was astounding. These, with some of Darrell Bunnell's fresh cucumber made a salad with the very best taste of summer. Sam Avery, who is performing at with the Spiritual Warriors this morning, shared a salad this morning, at breakfast downtown, and agreed. Right next to the Perfect Red tomatoes are perfect green ones. A shopper from Virginia, ahead in the queue at the stall, was happy to get green tomatoes. Said she couldn't find them at Farmers Markets back in Virginia. There may still be some of these. Mr. Bunnell brought plenty. The market is open until 12pm noon CT, today.

Epicurean Great Dane: Caesar Tested the new label

2013-08-03 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square - Photo by Ed Waggener. Caesar, the slightly larger of the to brothers has a new gig at the Farmers Market on the Square. He's been in training with David Moore, standing by the 235 pound Great Dane puppy dog, who's been bringing him to the Farmers Market to act as popcorn ambassador for Tucker's Station Farms, a job he's held - and still holds - and performs with exemplary distinction. Now Caesar is taste testing culinary wares around the Square. Last week Caesar was given a Jay Cox country ham biscuit, down it in one gulp, and pronounced it superb. His brother, Lucky, in front, is a shy, dignified dog and will take no part in Paula Deen theatrics. Both Lucky and Caesar are rescue dogs. Though actually only brothers by adoption, the two dogs have strong family bonds now, and lead very happy pampered lives, except may when they visit Tucker's Station, where police like discipline is imposed, and canines lead a dog's life, not even able to watch a little Tv after the 10pmCT, Barbara and Wayne Armitage fiat imposing light's out at that time. However, before anyone calls animal abuse, they at least have air conditioned lodges, and the rest of the day they get to watch approved Tv shows as much as they like.
