Adair Co. School District campus smoke-free

Effective Today: Policy applies to outside as well as inside buildings

By Alan W. Reed, Superintendent

Beginning today, Monday, July 1, 2013, all Adair County schools and the entire campus is smoke-free.

The new policy applies to everyone, including school board employees and parents, and prohibits using or having tobacco products on campus or at school functions.

This new policy ensures the adults on our campus will model a tobacco-free lifestyle for our students. It also supports health lessons taught in classrooms and will prepare students for workplaces with tobacco-free policies.

The policy will keep students and adults from being exposed to secondhand smoke, which can trigger asthma attacks and affects overall health.

We have all witnessed lives shortened in our own families from smoking or using tobacco. I hope that if you still use tobacco products that you will enroll in one of a number of smoking cessation classes.

I have been most pleased that some of our own employees have initiated classes by our own employees and offered through the Adair County Health Department.
