Dutch Dad reminds writer of her own father

A Father's Day Memory of Earl Reid Marcum

By Linda Waggener

Thank you, Peg Schaeffer, for sharing your story about your father. It touched me so much, especially your comment which I too, have felt often, "I wish I had been a better daughter.

My dad, Earl Reid Marcum, was a beautiful man with a warm spirit who encouraged me to always put others first, think on the good side, and to always remember to smile.

He said often that in America we could have anything we wanted if we just worked hard for it.

He fought hard in the Philippines during WWII to preserve that privilege for generations to come.

I wish I'd taken notes on those rare occasions when he talked about his experiences there.

He loved to fish and play music and laugh at every opportunity, especially at kittens kittening. I grew up and married a man who is a good dad and just enjoyed the opportunity to cook him a special Father's Day breakfast, and together Ed and I honor the sons we raised who are themselves now good dads.

Earl Reid Marcum was a good influence our boys, his first grandchildren who are now parents.

He'd have been thoroughly delighted with his great grandchildren. So thank you Peg for writing and sharing and reminding me of good memories. - Linda Reid Marcum Waggener
