The Final Word: UL has greatest year in major college sports 'No major college has ever done what they did this year in the 3 major sports.' - TRAVIS PAUL SCOTT, Guest sports analyst By Travis Paul Scott Sports Commentary I would like to offer congratulations to the University of Louisville Athletic Department for the greatest year ever in major college sports. No major college has ever done what they did this year in the 3 major sports. Their men and women's basketball teams both reached the Final Four (the men's team winning the national championship). Their football team won a major bowl game (over Florida). Now their baseball team is going to the College World Series. It's never been done before by any major college. I don't expect our 2 local sportswriters or our radio station (WAIN) to say much about it. They didn't congratulate Rick Pitino's Cardinals for winning the basketball championship in April (and he did it without a roster full of high swchool All-Americans). I was a rabid UK fan in the late 40's, 50's, and early 60's. My heroes were Bill Spivey, Cliff Hagan, Frank Ramsey, Vernon Hatton, and Johnny Cox. I got away from being a UK fan in the mid 60's. There was so much racial slurring against U of L and Western Kentucky (U of L had Westley Unseld and Butch Beard and Western Kentucky had Jim McDaniels, Jerry Dunn, Clarence Glover, the Smith brothers, and Jim Rose). All of them played high school basketball in Kentucky before going into the pros after college. University of Kentucky, at that time, would not take black players on their team. UK fans came up with all kinds of racial jokes about the black players at UL and WKU. Sorry, Big Blue fans, but this year belongs to Little Brother. And we did it without turning our basketball program into an NBA instructional team (a 1 or 2 year and done program). Must be nice to have such loyalty to your school from the players. Once again, great athletic year for the University of Louisville! -Travis Paul Scott This story was posted on 2013-06-10 19:10:28
