Camp Kick It 2013 in progress at LWC Holloway Wellness Center Click on headline for complete story with photo(s)< hr> By Dana Harmon, Director Camp Kick It An extraordinary opportunity for 80 Adair County students grades K-6 is going on at the Lindsey Wilson College Holloway Health and Wellness Center, 399 Williams Street, Columbia, KY this summer. For the second summer Lindsey Wilson has opened their campus to Camp Kick It!, a health and wellness summer program funded this year by 21st Century Community Learning Centers at Col. Wm. Casey Elementary (Camp Casey) and Adair County Elementary (Camp Safari), Family Resource Centers at Col. Wm. Casey/John Adair Intermediate and Adair County Elementary, as well as Adair County Migrant Education, LWC Bonner Scholars and United Way. The content focus of this camp is personal wellness, nutrition, psychomotor skills, safety and lifetime physical wellness. For four weeks which began on May 28, 2013, students arrive at 8:30amCT, for breakfast at the Cranmer Dining Center, and then walk across campus to the Health Center for a morning filled with activities led by LWC student staff. Students will learn the basics of various sports, swim, play both indoors and out, participate in teambuilding exercises, play games and make crafts. They then walk back across campus to the Cranmer Dining Center where they are treated to lunch by the friendly dining center staff. After lunch they return to the Health Center for an afternoon of activities led by the LWC student staff, school staff and Community Partners, such as the Lake Cumberland District Health Department, Kosair's Charities Bicycle Safety, Adair County Public Library, UK Cooperative Extension Service, Rick Wilson Safety Lessons and more. They wrap up each day at 1pmCT ready for another day where they "kick it into gear, kick bad habits and kick start life-long health!" Planning and implementing this camp could not have been accomplished without tremendous collaboration among Adair County Schools (Camp Casey's Dana Harmon and Camp Safari's Courtney Coomer, Family Resource Center at CWC/JAIS, Paula Garrison and Angie Smith and ACES, Debbie Cowan, and Migrant Education, Angie Neat), Lindsey Wilson College (Holloway Health and Wellness Centers' Joel Peterson and Ricky Steakin, Jeff Willis and staff at Cranmer Dining Center, Bonner Scholar Co-Director, Amy Thompson-Wells and of course, Sabine Eastham for the ice cream) and Community Partners, Lee Ann Jessee, Jelaine Harlowe, Destiny Greer, Kelli Bonifer, and Rick Wilson. Many thanks are owed to many people for pulling together to create a summer our kids will never forget!! - Dana Harmon, 21st CCLC Camp Casey Direct This story was posted on 2013-06-04 18:07:39
