LWC groups donate sports equipment to local military in Jordan By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - When Adair County resident Shahid Iqbal and his fellow Kentucky National Guard soldiers arrived in Jordan, the discovered that their base had a dearth of recreational and sports equipment. Other than a few broken pool cues and pingpong paddles, the base was devoid of recreational and sporting equipment to help soldiers pass time between assignments. The base didn't even have "balls of any kind," Iqbal said. So earlier this year a group of Lindsey Wilson College staff members and students in the college's Residence Life Office, Student Activities Office, Recreation Club and intramurals program held a drive to collect recreational and sports equipment for the soldiers. They sent the soldiers an assortment of items that included basketballs and volleyballs, dominoes, various playing cards, dice, checkers, chess, darts, and pingpong paddles, balls and table repair kit. They also threw in LWC pennants, decals and t-shirts to help give the base an Adair County feel. "The equipment Lindsey Wilson sent will help tremendously in terms of keeping soldiers' morale up," said Iqbal, who is also the base's non-commissioned officer in charge of recreation activities. "Pingpong and basketball are two of the favorite pastimes around here, and everyone loves to play darts and volleyball when there is a chance. ... It is amazing how just the littlest things can make the biggest impact when you're away from your comforts of home." LWC Director of Residence Life Jordan Willis spearheaded the drive, along with help from Smith Hall Resident Director Justin Cason. "Shahid is one of my best friends and I was the best man in his wedding, so I had to make sure he had some stuff to keep him entertained," Willis said. "The soldiers asked for the stuff, and Justin and I thought the least we could do was try to get them something together." Iqbal, who graduated from LWC in December, said he was touched that his alma mater reached out to him and his fellow soldiers.
