Bridge replacement expected to be complete by end of July. Repairs necessitated following bridge

By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Elizabethtown, KY

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (May 24, 2013) - Bridge replacement on KY 1136 over the Wendell H. Ford Western Kentucky Parkway in Elizabethtown is scheduled to begin following the Memorial Day Weekend. The project requires closure of the road at the bridge location. During demolition and construction phases, motorists wishing to access locations to the east of the bridge must do so by using the following detour route: US 31W Bypass north to US 62 east to US 31W south to KY 1136. Motorists on KY 1136 wishing to access locations west of the bridge must use the same detour, in reverse order.

Bridge demolition will also require two nights of temporary closures on the Western Kentucky Parkway. Tuesday night, May 28, 2013, beginning at 9pmET, westbound lanes will be closed at various times under the bridge though 5amET. Wednesday night, May 29, 2013, beginning at 9pmET, eastbound lanes will be closed at various times under the bridge through 5am. During the closures, Kentucky State Police will be initiating rolling road blocks on the parkway to queue traffic. Interstate 65 motorists wishing to travel west on the parkway should pay close attention as they enter the parkway interchange. Southbound I65 motorists should pay close attention to detour signs, which will provide an alternate route WK Parkway west, via US 31W.

The KY 1136 bridge is currently reduced to one-way alternating traffic after being struck by a commercial vehicle traveling west on the parkway last fall. Quick planning and execution by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has enabled construction to begin. The entire project should be completed by July 31st, weather permitting.
