LWC Baseball wins in walk-off fashion, beats Concordia 2-1

DAYTONA BEACH, FL. - Russ Morse delivered a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Lindsey Wilson baseball to a 2-1 win over Concordia (CA) at the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round at Sliwa Stadium, 601 South Clyde Morris Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL.

The Blue Raiders (45-18) advance into the first of potentially two championship games of the Daytona Beach Bracket against the host Embry-Riddle (FL). First pitch is set for 5pmCT.
If third-seeded Lindsey Wilson can knock off the host Eagles, it would force a second championship game on Sunday, May 12, 2013 at 1pmCT.

Today, Morse's hit - along with his defense - and Darren Travers pitching was good enough to help the Blue Raiders survive a third straight elimination game and avenge a loss to the No. 2-seeded Eagles. Concordia dropped Lindsey Wilson into the consolation bracket with a 4-1 win on Thursday.

It was the first win for a lower seed over a higher seed in the tournament.

With one out in the ninth inning, Manuel Ozoria doubled down the right field line and moved to third base when Concordia's Ty Holm bobbled the ball in the right field corner.

With the winning run just 90 feet away, Concordia starting pitcher Chris Garrison intentionally walked both Jeanadro Andino and Mitchell Osnowitz to load the bases and set up a force play at each base.

Behind in the count - a ball and two strikes - Morse sent a laser between shortstop and third base to give the Blue Raiders their program-record 45th win of the season.

While Morse delivered in the clutch, the same can be said about Travers.

After a 16-pitch save in last night's win over Ave Maria (FL), Travers hurled his 15th complete game of the season to improve to 11-2.

He allowed just one run on six hits by throwing an efficient 99 pitches. Travers lowered his team-leading ERA to 2.03 on the season.

The Blue Raiders struck first with a run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Osnowitz led off the inning with a double and later scored on one of four Eagle errors during the game. While the lead was nice, Lindsey Wilson squandered a chance for a big inning -- leaving runners stranded on second and third with no outs in the inning.

Concordia scored the equalizer in the fifth inning as Matt Palmer tripled and scored on Holm's infield single to tie the game at 1-1.

In the latter innings, both teams mounted marginal threats before inning-ending defensive gems. Morse ended the eighth and ninth innings by throwing out two base runners while Concordia forced Mid-South Conference Player of the Year Manuel Alonso to ground into a double play to end the eighth.

Like Travers, Garrison went the distance allowing two runs on eight hits in 8-1/3 innings.

Jeff Kerian led the Blue Raiders with two of the team's eight hits. Alonso, Osnowitz, Ozoria, Morse, Leandro Perez and Trey Davis each add a hit apiece.
