Jon Halsey: On responsible gun ownership

Comment on gunshot tragedy: Says that when his children were living at home, his firearms were stored in a gun safe 500 miles from his home

By Jon Halsey
Personal commentary

What a tragedy! I can't begin to imagine the shock, grief, heartache, and disbelief the parents must be experiencing.

As a long time owner of numerous and various firearms I feel a certain rage at this senseless loss of innocent life. For a 5 year old to have access to a loaded weapon is mindless negligence that is repeated over and over.

This is certainly a situation that calls for all firearms in that location to be confiscated and the owner barred for life from obtaining any additional firearms. This is definitely an issue that responsible firearms owners agree with.

When my children were still living at home my firearms were stored in a gun safe at my parents house 500 miles away. On the occasions that I did hunt or skeet shoot, I borrowed or rented a firearm and it never crossed my door step. Extreme? Yes, but I rested easy and foregoing hunting during the interim was a very small price to pay.
