Mattie Kerns, Adair County, KY (1919-2013)

She was a native of Adair County, KY, and the matriarch of a highly regarded NE Adair County family. She was the daughter of the late Lonzo and Willie Kate Redford Barrett and the widow of Welby Ray Kerns. She leaves 25 direct living descendants. Mrs. Kerns was a member of the Millerfield Brethren in Christ Church and a homemaker.

Mattie Kerns age 94 years a resident of Columbia KY formerly of the Millerfield Community of Adair County, passed away Friday April 5, 2013 at 12:50pmCT at the Westlake Regional Hospital in Columbia, KY, after several weeks illness.

Funeral service: Monday, April 8, 2013 at 2pmCT/3pmET, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Dennis Roberts the officiating clergy. Interment is in the Millerfield Cemetery. The family request visitation after 4pmCT, on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.



Pallbearers: Ricky Dial, Dillan Kerns, Kenzie Kerns, Kevin Kerns, Michael Kerns, and Scotty Kerns.

Honorary pallbearers: James Kerns and Ricky Kerns.

She was born March 23, 1919 in Adair County, KY. She was the daughter of the late Lonzo and Willie Kate Redford Barrett. She died Friday, April 5, 2013, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 94 years, 13 days.

Mrs. Kerns was preceded in death by her husband: Welby Ray Kerns; three children: George Randall Kerns, Shirley Kerns Bailey and Wanda Kerns, and by one granddaughter, Rochelle Akin; one brother, John Barrett; and three sisters, Mary Streeval, Bonnie Goodin and Mae Redford.

She is survived by the following:
  • Two sons: Hollis Kerns of Columbia, KY; and Donald Kerns of Columbia, KY

  • Eleven grandchildren

  • Seven great grandchildren

  • Five great great grandchildren

  • A special nephew: Russell "Jr" Webb

  • and a host of other relative and friends
Mrs. Kerns was a member of the Millerfield Brethren in Christ Church and a homemaker.
