Special ColumbiaMagazine.com traffic story
From information from Amber Hale, KYTC District 8, Somerset, KY

The Kentucky Highway Department plans road work to improve sight distance on KY 206, Liberty Road, near KY 3491, Greenhills Road, in Columbia, KY.

The project is scheduled be let February 22, 2013, but Kentucky Highway Department District 8 Public Information Officer Amber Hale says that Kentucky 206, Liberty Road will not be allowed to be closed to traffic until May 20, 2013, and that the contract will have 18 days to complete the project.

According to Ms. Hale, "The project will entail cutting down the crest vertical on KY 206 west of KY 3491 (Greenhills Road), which will substantially improve the ability to see the intersection sooner, as well as permit vehicles pulling out of KY 3491 the ability to see oncoming eastbound vehicles sooner.

"The improved sight distance will be realized by lowering the roadway of KY 206 by about 2 feet through most of the project, tapering to the existing roadway level at both ends. "This lowering, along with 2 foot shoulders and 4 foot clear slopes to the ditches will improve the sight distance considerably. "There will be no turn lanes constructed with this project.

"The project is only about 600' long, and begins basically at KY 3491 and involves working on KY 206.

"The typical section we will be using is very much the same as what is out there today. It will consist of 10' driving lanes, but will have 2' paved shoulders. The road will be closed during construction, and traffic will have to detour around this area for the length of the project.

"The project is scheduled to be let on February 22, 2013, but KY 206 will NOT be allowed to be closed to traffic until May 20, 2013. The contractor will have 18 working days to complete the job."
