Poetry by Robert Stone: Words and pictures, a sonnet

Words and pictures
-a sonnet inspired by a photo of holiday lights by Lisa Comperry
I cannot see the thing you see unless
we both have shared a brought up this a way
enough alike to make a common guess
when faced with naming image on display.

I cannot feel the pang you feel until
we both have known a joy or sorrow strong
enough the blood to heat or body chill
when unexpected trials come along.

I cannot know the love you know before
we both have found a resonance maintained
enough to hear an echoing uproar
when stirred by slightest shadows unexplained.

I cannot find both words and pictures joined
enough to lessen need for yet uncoined.

- Robert Stone, 2 December 2012
