John Chowning: How he became a lifelong UL Cardinal fan It was of necessity, for his position at the family table, that he was converted to the One-true Basketball Camp*; he's remained steadfast, even though all four of his beloved grandchildren have backsliden to their Great Grandfather's basketball doctrine, and are, today, strong supporters of The Other Side - EW Related: Comments re article 56046 Remembering WKU basketball greats McDaniels Glover By John Chowning Billy Fudge raises an interesting point in his comments. He indicated that there may have been more than an occasional discussion of political issues at the Chowning household in the 1950s and 1960s. He is right! We actively engaged in active and lively discussions on the issues of the day and were encouraged by our parents to be well read and informed. And we also delved into the great doctrines of our Christian faith and were blessed to have parents who similarly guided us to seek understanding and learning relative to our Christian walk. There was always the love of basketball that prompted a lot of enthusiasm and lively discussion as well. There was no one more committed to the UK Wildcats than my late father, Chattin Chowning. He loved WKU as well. I became lifelong University of Louisville Cardinals basketball fan in the late 1950s because it would stir up the Big Blue fans in the family. Now, I'm seeing history repeated as all four of our grandchildren have become very strong Big Blue fans. Their great-grandfather Chowning smiles down on them approvingly! - John Chowning *One True Basketball Camp: EW is a graduate of the late Charles Marshall's "All Anyone Needs to Know about the Game of Basketball," seminar, and is, therefore, well-versed in the game. The seminar was similar to the 5-minute college classes of Father Guido Sarducci, but better, more time saving. The two word answer to ace the finals was "UL Cardinals."
