Adair Schools may be facing another round of budget cuts Congress has imposed 'sequestration' measures which could impose $1.2 trillion in budget cuts, which may mean automatic 7.8 percent cuts in Federal aid to schools From the Adair County, KY, School District Superintendent Alan Reed said the Adair County School District is soon likely be facing across the board cuts in the district's federal programs. The district will know the percentage of these cuts by Jan. 2, 2013. The Budget Control Act of 2011 calls for imposing $1.2 trillion in budget cuts to almost all federal programs. The cuts, also known as sequestration, would reduce education funds by 7.8 percent or more. Reed said this could lead to larger class sizes, fewer course offerings, loss of extracurricular activities, and faculty and staff layoffs." These cuts would be recurring for 10 years, and could also lead to the disintegration of programs such as Title I grants for disadvantaged students, English Language Acquisition and several other programs. "Since Congress has been unable to come to an agreement on how to reduce the budget, this 'fail-safe' motion where those funds will be removed automatically will happen across the board nationally," said Reed. Reed says the school board was unanimous in its decision to join school districts from across the United States by passing a resolution that urges Congress to mitigate these cuts: This story was posted on 2012-10-22 15:32:30
