Hayne big factor in LW Volleyball’s 3-0 shutout of Cumberlands

Andrea Taylor has a flawless match

News from Lindsey Wilson College

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Cumberlands (KY) is known for its scrappy defense, but on Tuesday night, October 2, the Lindsey Wilson College volleyball team found a way to beat it, posting a 3-0 shutout against the Patriots in Mid-South Conference play at Biggers Sports Center.

Taylor Hayne had a lot to do with finding those holes in the defense. The sophomore outside hitter tallied a match-high 13 kills to lead the Lindsey Wilson (15-7, 6-1 MSC) offense. Courtney Doyle also turned in an all-around good match, netting 12 kills, four aces, two digs and a block.

Andrea Taylor had a flawless match setting up her teammates with 42 assists, while the best output from Cumberlands was 16 assists from Samantha Stuckwisch as her Patriots fell in straight sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-23).

It was a balanced defensive effort by Lindsey Wilson with Kristi Hager leading the way with nine digs as Angela Mlachnik chipped in with seven and Taylor found six. The Blue Raiders sent down just two blocks in the match, including Doyle’s and one by Emily Meeks.

Lindsey Wilson finished the match with a .323 hitting percentage compared to just .122 for the Patriots. Cumberlands (10-6, 4-3 MSC) fought to close moments in each set with its defense, tallying seven blocks, including four from Megan Schulte.

With the win, the Blue Raiders have won three straight matches and have beaten the Patriots the past four meetings in the series. But it didn’t start out looking like an easy 3-0 win.

Cumberlands led by as many as four points in the first set and after a Cassie Kalman kill led 14-12 late in the frame. But after giving up the next point on an error, the Blue Raiders went on a7-0 run to take a 19-14 lead on a kill by Sarah Anderson.

Five points was as close as the Patriots would get the rest of the way as Lindsey Wilson took the opening set 25-16.

After falling behind 2-0, Cumberlands never held a lead in the second set as the Blue Raiders went up 20-12 after an error by Kalman. The rest of the set went in favor of Lindsey Wilson 5-4 to bring the match score to 2-0.

The final set was a lot like the first as the Patriots held close all the way up to a 14-14 tie after an attack error by Kailey Moorhead. But like the first-set collapse, Cumberlands allowed Lindsey Wilson to race off on a 5-0 run to lead 19-14 take control of the set.

There was a tense moment late in the set as the Patriots rallied to a 24-22 deficit behind a kill by Kalman, but Anderson posted a clean kill to put the match away for a 25-23 win.
