Supt. Reed outlines process for new school configuration

Bold new step will save $500,000 a year, put all students in new or renovated schools, and rids county of ignominious distinction of having the No. 1 an No. 8 worst school buildings in the state

By Alan W. Reed, Superintendent
News from Adair County School District

Good morning to all of you!

As you are well aware, the Local Planning Committee met yesterday afternoon and voted unanimously to reduce the number of schools in our district from 5 to 4. It is estimated this move will save our cash-strapped district around five-hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) per year. In addition, this bold move by the LPC and Board of Education, puts all of our students in new or rebuilt schools and closes two buildings currently designated by the state as the number 1 and number 8 worst facilities in the Commonwealth - John Adair Intermediate and Colonel William Casey Elementary School.

In short, we are taking control of our own destiny, instead of waiting for some government bailout or capital outlay (building) funds that are likely to be years out there, if at all. The actions of the LPC and the BOE are both fiscally and educationally sound. Taxpayers will also appreciate our efforts to streamline. I'd bet that many of you have often wondered why we hadn't considered this option in the first place.

No doubt many of you have serious concerns about your own future. I want you to know that I am sensitive to those issues that affect your lives. With that said, here are our plans surrounding reconfiguration:
  1. Make principal assignments by January 1, 2013

  2. Ask you for input regarding placement by February 1, 2013, and schedule interviews with many of you

  3. Attempt to assign staff by late February or early March 2013, working with principals and central office leadership team.

  4. Make other decisions which will come after new site-based councils are decided upon
  5. Roughly two weeks ago I stopped construction on the west-facing wing of the new elementary after on-site visits from our architects and the Kentucky Department of Education. Hopefully we will be back on track in about a week. In a worst case scenario, the start of school could be delayed next year. I will keep you updated on the progress of the new school, yet to be named.

Finally, I want all of you to know that your hard work is highly valued and all that all personnel assignments will be based on what is in the "best" educational interests of our students, based on the best information I can gather.

I will be communicating regularly with principals during this process so that they can quickly and honestly pass along any information, as I receive it.

    Sincerely,
    Alan W. Reed
