Site Base Decision: Ag/Choir mom understands both sides By Tracey Pierce Personal Commentary As an employee and alumnus of Adair County High School, a parent of two high school students, and a "farmer's daughter", I would like to express my opinion after attending Monday night's Site Base Council Meeting. I want to begin by stating that I fully support the agricultural program in the high school. It is a very important program. Without agriculture there would be no life. I grew up on a farm and appreciate all of the hard labor and finances that it takes to run one properly. I have participated in everything from milking cows, to setting and cutting tobacco, to picking pepper, to cutting cabbage, to filing taxes. We all understand and sympathize with the changes that may take place in the school. Change is hard, but sometimes it is inevitable. I have a daughter of my own who was in choir in elementary school. She was very disappointed when it was done away with. She was also disappointed when she heard that she would not be able to take music in high school. She was disappointed, yet again, when the soccer program was cut due to funding. I also have a son who is participating in the vocational program through Russell County and would be very disappointed if he was not able to do so. In saying all of this, I want to state that I one hundred percent support Mr. (ACHS Principal Troy) Young's decision in his recommendation to the superintendent. As was said Monday night, "All of our students at Adair County High School must be taken into consideration." We cannot vie one student over another, the career-bound over the college-bound, and vise versa. The number of students in our classes was researched prior to the meeting. I feel that Mr. Young's decision was based on those numbers and the state requirements for graduation. I am confident that the needs of our agriculture students will still be met, as will the needs of our college bound students. I would also like to say, in closing, that I thank God everyday for my employment in the school. We have a wonderful faculty and staff who would bend over backward to help any student in need. I also realize that, because of budget cuts, my employment could be taken away at any time. We, as a community, should be thankful that, no matter what the Site Base votes tonight, we will still have our agriculture program. It will not be cut completely as some of the other programs have been. We should band together and support our school system's effort in trying to do the best for our children with the finances that they have been provided. May God Bless You, - Tracey Pierce This story was posted on 2012-09-27 10:58:11
