Somerset Community College only KY school to get SIP grant

SIP (Strengthening Institutions Program): Somerset Community college awarded nearly $1.8 million through strengthening institutions program grant

By Allison Horseman
News from Somerset Community College

SOMERSET, KY (September 20, 2012) - The U.S. Department of Education recently announced the award of $5.4 million in new grants to 14 colleges and universities as part of the Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP). Somerset Community College (SCC) has been awarded $383,561 for the first year of the grant and a total of $1,890,717 for a projected five years. SCC is the only higher education institution in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to receive the award.

This SIP initiative is designed to help postsecondary schools expand their capacity to serve low-income students by providing funds to improve and strengthen the academic quality, institutional management and fiscal stability of eligible institutions and build a framework to help students complete college.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, SIP funds may be used for a variety of purposes, including planning, faculty development, administrative management, the establishment of an endowment fund, and the development and improvement of academic programs. Institutions may also use the grant for other projects, such as allowing the joint use of instructional facilities, performing construction and maintenance activities, and developing student service programs designed to improve academic success, including providing innovative, customized instruction designed to help move students rapidly into core courses and retain them though program completion.

At SCC, the award will fund a proposed activity called C.A.R.E. - or Center for Advising, Retention, and Engagement - and will have two components. The first is the development of a comprehensive "one-stop" advising center that will focus on the entering and first year student with a comprehensive support system. Support services will include assessment, block course placement in learning communities, intrusive advising, intervention strategies, instruction, and academic and other flexible support services for the at-risk student. The second component is a College Completion Initiative that will engage and track students as they work toward earning an academic credential. Somerset Community College has campuses in Somerset and London, and centers in Clinton, McCreary, Casey, and Russell counties. The website is somerset.kctcs.edu.
