Heart goes out to parents of young people in Knifley, KY crash

Tragedy is also a reminder to all to use seatbelts

By Jon Halsey
Personal commentary

My heart goes out to the parents of these young people. I'm sure their grief is unfathomable.

For all parents, when your sons and daughters start driving is not the time to start telling them to "Buckle Up". This tragic accident is not an isolated case and should serve as a reminder to all parents that as soon as their children graduate from the car seat to insist that they put on the seat belt each and every time they get in a vehicle.

I know from my own experience that it can and does become such second nature that I have been driving and think to put on my seat belt only to discover that it's already on.

For those parents that refuse to set an example for their children by not putting on the belt themselves (some in the misguided notion that the government has no business telling them what to do) it is NOT just a matter of the law - it's a matter of common sense and a major part of exercising parental responsibility.
