Now is time of year to plant the strawberries

A Timely Tip from the Adair County Garden Club and the Adair County Farmer's Market

By Barbara Armitage

Really? Yes really - if you want to harvest strawberries next summer then now is the time to get ready to plant.

It's important to take the time to prepare your strawberry patch. Strawberries are sun lovers and need at least 8 hours of full sun each day. They prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.8. Much of Adair County soils fall into this soil pH but it's always a good idea to have your soil tested. Contact the Adair County Extension Office at 270.384.2317 for details on having your soil tested.

As a general rule strawberries are not happy in heavy clay (which we have in abundance here). To help your strawberries live a happier and more productive life generously amend the soil in your garden with lots of composted material like grass clippings, leaves, rotted sawdust or other organic materials.

Planting strawberries in Adair County is kinda like learning to live on the Eastern/Central time zone line. Sometimes it's really helpful to be able to make an appointment in Taylor County then time travel back to Adair County for an appointment scheduled at the same time.

So how does this apply to strawberries? Well here again we live right on the line. According to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map we live in zone 6B however changing weather patterns and micro climates have made the line less of a line and more of a hazy suggestion. We can go either way - it's perfectly OK to plant strawberries in the fall or in the spring here.

Confused? The best way to decide when to plant your strawberries is to ask yourself this question. When do I want to harvest my strawberries?

If you plant your strawberries in the spring you will have to wait a year to harvest your berries. If you are a bit more impatient you can plant your strawberries in the fall and you will harvest your first crop the following spring.

For more information on growing strawberries in Kentucky you can contact Barbara Armitage at the Adair County Garden Club 270-250-2979 or the Adair County Extension Office at 270-384-2317. The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture offers an online publication at Growing Strawberries.

To purchase local strawberry plants visit the Adair County Farmers Market located at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairgrounds Street, Columbia. Market hours are Tuesday 6am-10amCT and 3pm-6pmCT, Friday 6amCT-10amCT and Saturday 7am-11amCT. - Barbara Armitage
